Main Stage OiFP, Odeska Street

Two masterpieces of the verismo repertoire: Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo and Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni have been an inseparable pair for years. Both Pagliacci and Cavalleria rusticana were written for the same competition announced by a Milanese music publishing house in 1890. Mascagni’s score won first place. However, it quickly became clear that Leoncavallo’s work also possessed exceptional artistic value. The success of the premiere of Pagliacci exceeded all expectations, and from that moment on, both operas have been performed together in one performance.

In keeping with this tradition, the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic also includes two verismo works in its repertoire. The Białystok production, conducted by Massimiliano Caldi and directed by Michał Znaniecki, will be the world premiere of the original score of Cavalleria rusticana, adapted by Bärenreiter.

Pagliacci takes place in an Italian village and depicts the lives of a group of circus performers. The work’s dramatic structure is built around the main characters’ love tragedy, and Leoncavallo’s incredibly melodic and dynamic music brings out the characters’ full emotional range. The composer skillfully combined farce and tragedy in a single work, depicting the drama of jealousy within the artistic community, culminating in bloodshed.

In Cavalleria rusticana, Mascagni created a dense mixture of love, passion, betrayal, shame, duel and death—emotions seething like a volcano against the backdrop of the Sicilian countryside, through which an Easter procession passes. The composer emphasizes the opera’s veristic style through brutality, naturalism, melodramatic gestures, and singing mixed with chatter and shouts.

The performance is performed in Italian with Polish subtitles.
