G. Rossini, Cinderella, or Goodness Triumphant

Gioachino Rossini composed his opera in just 24 days to a libretto by Jacopo Ferretti. Inspired by Charles Perrault’s fairy tale, this version of the story for adults and children, devoid of magical props, fairies and slippers, tells the story of Angelina – a girl with a pure heart who, despite the adversities and injustices of the world around her, is full of kindness and empathy.
In our staging, the opera takes place in two worlds: the world of everyday reality and the world of Angelina’s dreams, the titular Cinderella. Everyday reality refers to the post-war 1950s. It is maintained in black and white colours. The world of dreams is a world of ‘cut-outs’ from colourful magazines, pasted into Angelina’s personal diary. It is also the key to the staging and creates a dramatic and comical mirage of the carousel of human life. It is in this dreamlike space that the operatic fairy tale unfolds, full of grotesque humour, lively music and vocal fireworks characteristic of bel canto.
The characters play the roles of their lives in a theatrical world of appearances – Magnifico’s stepfather dreams of wealth, his daughters dream of the crown, Prince Ramiro appears in the guise of Dandini’s valet, and the valet appears in the guise of the prince. The only authentic character is Angelina, who, guided by true feelings, leaves the ball, leaving Ramiro a symbolic bracelet instead of a slipper – a sign of freedom and independence.
The opera ends with a simple but powerful message: truth, kindness and forgiveness can triumph. Or perhaps it is all just a dream? The director leaves the choice up to the audience.
The license to use the translation of the libretto and its arrangement, as well as the choreography, was granted by the ZAiKS Association of Authors
