A great, forbidden, and unexpected love, for the lovers themselves, is the central theme of the musical West Side Story. This modernized version of Romeo and Juliet is a story without a happy ending, but who among us hasn’t dreamed of feeling, even for a moment, what the main characters feel? The more pure and innocent this initial feeling is, the clearer the backdrop becomes: a dancing battle between youth gangs for territory and influence, deeply rooted prejudices, the brutal and inept attempts by the local police to control the growing chaos, and an implacable intolerance of any love that betrays blood ties.
Like Shakespeare’s work, this – one of the most important musicals in history – remains painfully relevant. Rejection, even stigmatization, based on identity or beliefs remains a constant in the world around us.
Despite the passage of time, West Side Story remains a stunning visual and musical feast: gripping dramatic scenes, a wealth of magnificent choreography, outstanding songs, and an extraordinary richness of composition. All of this, brought to the Main Stage of the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic, offers a unique opportunity to revisit this unquestionable masterpiece of the genre.
