‘Carmen Suite’ by Rodion Schedrin – Georges Bizet
The Stoyanov Ballet presents the famous work ‘Carmen Suite’ by composer Rodion Shchedrin – a magnificent interpretation of Georges Bizet’s brilliant music. The ballet ‘Carmen Suite’ was created especially for the great Russian ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, choreographed and directed by Alberto Alonso, and premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre in April 1967. Alberto Alonso is a choreographer who was able to stage ‘Carmen’ in a different, non-traditional way, escaping from the sentimental pseudo-Spanish style of classical ballet, fulfilling his creative dream at the request of prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. Alberto Alonso said of Maya Plisetskaya that she was 100% Carmen – the true embodiment of rebellion and uncompromisingness. Maya Plisetskaya herself admitted in interviews that it was the role of her life; more than that, she brought a political message to it: the heroine is a symbol of a free personality, fighting a fatal battle with the authorities of the time. The musical transcription of the opera’s themes was done by composer Rodion Shchedrin, who worked on the score with incredible passion. He managed to achieve true virtuosity in conveying the smallest psychological nuances of the great opera and Prosper Mérimée’s novella through music. In this way, Mérimée’s moving plot and the depth of feelings from Bizet’s opera took on In this way, Mérimée’s moving plot and the depth of feelings from Bizet’s opera took on a philosophical accent in the ballet suite. Carmen is an extraordinary quintessence of passionate emotions and strong characters, expressed through beautiful music and the content of a short novel.
‘Bolero’ by Maurice Ravel
The composer wrote the music in 1928, and it became his most popular work. The rhythm is gradually accelerated and marked by a snare drum, which repeats the same rhythmic figure in 24 beats, 169 times, for a total of 4,056 beats. It is this rhythm that provokes many choreographers to ‘read’ this music in various ways. Maurice Béjart’s magnificent original choreography served as the basis for the choreography created for BOLERO performed by the artists of the Stoyanov Ballet. This stage performance continues to surprise and arouse great interest and applause from audiences, who are mesmerised by the musical motif with its unusual magnetism and the energy of Ravel’s composition and the progenitor of Maurice Béjart’s choreography.
