On behalf of the organizer, the Podlasie Institute of Culture, we invite you to an exhibition of hand-woven and double-warp fabrics as part of Podlasie Weaves.
Perebores
– exhibition of hand-woven rugs – perebores
An exhibition from the collection of Krzysztof Bielicki, an enthusiast and collector of Podlasie folk art, who has amassed over 30 hand-woven fabrics over the years and has agreed to make them available to the general public. Each one has a story attached to it, which he eagerly tells.
– exhibition ‘Perebores from the Bug River’ from the Weaving Studio in Hruda
This exhibition is part of the collection of the Municipal Cultural Center in Biała Podlaska. The exhibition will feature perebores demonstrating the possibilities of using decorative weaving ornaments to adorn clothing in both historical and contemporary contexts.
Weaving Studio named after Stanisława Baj in Hruda is one of eight thematic workshops of the Municipal Cultural Center in Biała Podlaska, forming an educational and tourist trail called ‘The Land Woven by Perebor’. The workshop cultivates the weaving traditions of southern Podlasie and eastern Lublin, with particular attention to the technique and unique design of the perebors from the Bug River. A perebor is a weaving ornament that creates a patterned strip, woven simultaneously with a plain background. A characteristic feature of perebor is the symmetrical striped arrangement, with a dominant main strip, with a pattern consisting of simple geometric motifs. Perebors were used as a decorative element of regional costumes, tablecloths, towels and rugs. (The name perebor is associated with the activity of “thread picking” performed by the weaver – and the weaving skill of many weavers working there today is owed to the late master weaver – Stanisława Baj from Dołhobrody).
The exhibition presents a historic collection of textiles and contemporary inspirations from traditional perebor. The historic section of the exhibition features unique regional textiles made using various weaving techniques, regional everyday and festive costumes, and workshop equipment (a spinning wheel, łamanka, niddy-noddy, etc.). The contemporary section contains a collection inspired by the motif of traditional perebor (garments, napkins, bags, pillows).
‘Perebory – Weaving Traditions of the Bug River’ is an undisputed asset of regional culture; in 2016, it was added to the UNESCO National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Exhibition location: foyer of the OiFP, Podleśna 2 Street.
The exhibition will be open from August 28 to September 26, 2021, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
