On 10 January 2026, a new, spectacular staging of the master’s last opera – the first at the Met in almost 50 years – will be released in cinemas around the world. Charles Edwards, who after years of success as a set designer is making his debut as a director at the New York opera, is responsible for the staging. The leading, extremely demanding roles will be performed by stars of the world opera scene.
Lisette Oropesa and Lawrence Brownlee will play Elvira and Arturo, lovers separated by the political divisions of the English Civil War. After years of anticipation, on 21 March 2026, a broadcast that is not to be missed will hit cinema screens around the world. The phenomenal Lise Davidsen will take on one of the most demanding roles for a dramatic soprano – the role of the Irish princess Isolde in Tristan and Isolde, Wagner’s moving operatic meditation on love and death. She will be partnered by tenor Michael Spyres as the lovesick Tristan. This extraordinary event also marks the premiere of a new production directed by Yuval Sharon, an artist hailed by The New York Times as ‘the most visionary opera director of his generation’ and the first American to direct an opera at the famous Bayreuth Festival. It will also be the first performance of Tristan and Isolde at the New York opera under the baton of Met music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova will reprise her role as Brangäne, and bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny will appear as Gorwenal (following his enthusiastically received roles in The Flying Dutchman and The Ring of the Nibelung). On 30 May 2026, The Met: Live in HD 2025–26 season will conclude with a live broadcast of the first opera by American composer Gabriela Lena Frank: a magical realist portrait of Mexican artist couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The libretto was written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Referencing the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, the opera tells the story of Frida, played by mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard. Frida returns from the afterlife on the Day of the Dead to reunite with Diego (played by baritone Carlos Álvarez). The couple, famous for their numerous disputes, briefly revive their turbulent romance to experience both passion and suffering before saying goodbye to the world of the living forever. Conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin will lead the performance of Frank’s opera at the Metropolitan Opera. Deborah Colker is responsible for the direction and choreography of the new production, inspired by the paintings of Frida and Diego and ‘full of colour and fresh individuality’ (Los Angeles Times).
