Concert under the Honorary Patronage of the Metropolitan Archbishop of Białystok Józef Guzdek

G.F. Händel’s oratorio Messiah, HWV 56, will be performed during the concert on March 27th. It is one of the most significant works in world musical literature, bringing the composer international fame. First performed in Dublin in 1742, the work was written in just two weeks and was composed for the Irish people with the intention of ‘offering something new to this noble and kind nation’.

The libretto, created by Charles Jennens is a compilation of texts drawn from the Books of the Prophets, the Old Testament and the Gospels. Each of the three parts of the work deals with a separate theme. The first part announces the coming of the Messiah. The second part, culminating in the famous Hallelujah chorus, tells the story of the life, death and resurrection of Christ. The final movement, however, focuses on the fulfillment of the messianic mission – the salvation of humanity.

This work demonstrates the composer’s extraordinary skill, combining a free-flowing sonic description, formal rigor, lyricism, drama, solo, ensemble, and choral parts in perfect harmony.
