Bass. He graduated from the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw, where he was taught by Professor K. Pustelak, with a Magna cum Laude distinction. He has won numerous awards and distinctions at international vocal competitions. Recent successes include W.A. Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio (Osmin) at the ABAO Bilbao, G.F. Handel’s Alcina (Melisso) at the Los Angeles Opera, G. Verdi’s Il Vespers Sicilian (Procida) at the Bergen Opera, and W.A. Mozart’s The Magic Flute (Sarastro) at the Polish Royal Opera.
In the 2017/2018 season, he made his debut at the Royal Opera in Covent Garden, London, as Priest in D. Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, conducted by A. Pappano. His recent successes also include debuts at the Royal Danish Opera and the Welsh National Opera as Sir Giorgio in Bellini’s I puritani under the direction of C. Rizzi, and performances as Melisso in Handel’s Alcina (with Joyce DiDonato and The English Concert) under the direction of H. Bicket at New York’s Carnegie Hall, Paris’ Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, and the Theater an der Wien. He has also performed as Don Basilio (G. Rossini’s The Barber of Seville) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Oroveso (V. Bellini’s Norma) at the Teatro Nacional São Carlos in Lisbon, Asur (G. Rossini’s Semiramide) at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, Alidoro (G. Rossini’s Cinderella) at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Melisso (G. F. Handel’s Alcina) at the Opéra National de Bordeaux, Orbazzano (G. Rossini’s Tancredi) at the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, Talbot (G. Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda) at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Count Rodolfo (V. Bellini’s The Sleepwalker), and Rocco (L. van Beethoven’s Fidelio) at the Theater St. Gallen. His roles include Sarastro in W.A. Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Duce Alfonso in G. Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia, Raimondo in G. Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Zbigniew in S. Moniuszko’s The Haunted Manor, Figaro in W.A. Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Escamillo in G. Bizet’s Carmen, Gessler in G. Rossini’s William Tell, Talbot in G. Donizetti’s Maria Stuart, and Sparafucile in G. Verdi’s Rigoletto.
Wojtek Gierlach also performs successfully in concert and oratorio repertoire. He has sung, among others, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and G. Verdi’s Requiem with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, L. van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, J.S. Bach’s Magnificat with the Orquesta Nacional de España, Missa Solemnis by L. van Beethoven with the Konzerthaus Orchester Berlin.
