This charming, light-hearted and hilarious comic opera by Gaetano Donizetti is unfortunately rarely performed. The composer made such demands on the performers that very few singers are capable of taking on the role of Tonio. Why? In his aria of but three minutes, the artist has to sing as many as 9 high Cs. This role is sung by Javier Camarena, the star of Rossini’s “Semiramide” in the 2017–18 season. The title daughter of the regiment—an orphan adopted by soldiers who turns out to be of aristocratic descent—is played by Pretty Yende. This South African soprano made a memorable performance as Adina in the recently broadcast “L’Elisir d’amore” by the same composer.
