New cast. This performance is broadcast already for the third time. Giuseppe Verdi’s monumental opera, which tells a tragic love story from the times of the pharaohs, could not have received a more beautiful visual setting than that prepared at the Met by Sonja Frisell. In line with the 19th-century tradition, the production is literally dripping with gold, and the opulent decorations shimmer with all the colours of the rainbow. The scale of the whole enterprise is truly worthy of the pharaohs, in particular the famous triumphal march. After the first performance of “Aïda,” Verdi was called before the curtain 32 times, and his work is still regarded as one of the timeless opera classics. The love triangle between Ethiopian slave girl Aïda, Egyptian warrior Radamès and princess Amneris, grand group scenes and the aforementioned monumental scale of the production are bound to guarantee a memorable experience, especially given that the main roles are sung by Anna Netrebko, Anita Rachvelishvili and Aleksandrs Antoņenko.
